Photographers (DC): Claire Buffie

Miss New York 2010 is not just another pageant girl. Claire Buffie, or Buffie the Discrimination Slayer, as I like to refer to her, is affecting positive and lasting change through her platform entitled “Straight for Equality: Let’s Talk”, which focuses on opening the dialog about gay rights, which Buffie reminds us is “an umbrella term for so many issues. People only acquaint it with marriage.”

Not only is Buffie an outspoken advocate of human rights, she is also a remarkably talented working photographer and designer. I had the opportunity to interview her (through a series of emails on account of her busy schedule) to discuss some of her personal interests and get to know the Claire underneath the crown.

One of your many passions, and your talent for the Miss America competition, is dance. However, if anyone were to do a basic Google search on you, they would find out quickly that you are also an outstanding photographer and designer. Is this your ‘hidden’ talent?

I hope it’s not too hidden, because it’s what I do to pay the bills! I’d love if throughout this process, I got the word out about my photography more. I’ve been working to overlap my networks – pageants, professional, and the gay/acting community – to help all move forward with my creativity and talents.

How did you get into photography and design?

I have always been interested in photography – my mom took a million photos growing up and traveling. In high school, I taught myself black and white film developing and then went to college for Visual Communications (Graphic Design), but my emphasis was in photo. I felt that graphic design was more reliable and marketable, but that photography is actually more of my passion.

What types of photography do you shoot?

Commercial portraiture. I do a lot of headshots for actors, love dance photography when I get the chance to do it, and then weddings as well. I just love photographing people, when it focuses on who they are more than what they’re wearing [as opposed to fashion photography].

What lenses and flash equipment do you use?

I’m a Canon girl. I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II, 70-200 IS is used a lot, but for portraits, I have found myself using prime lenses more and more. 85mm prime = genius. Most of my lighting is natural, but indoors I use a ring flash with a moon kit softbox.

Some of the most outstanding photos on your website are the dance photography. Is this one of your strong points in photography since you are a dancer yourself?

I love dance photography and feel like it is my unique strength and niche. As a dancer, I understand movement and can anticipate how to capture it.

Would you rather be the one in the photos or the one taking them?

Nope! I actually like being behind the camera more. Getting your makeup done, wearing cool clothes and being a “model” for the day – it’s all fun, but I feel much more natural and comfortable behind the lens.

Have you thought about incorporating photography into your talent for Miss America?

Haha nah – I have had people suggest that while I dance, I show my dance photographs in the background. But I think it’s a bit of overstimulation. Too many things to look at.

Being a photographer and a huge gay rights activist, have you photographed any gay marriages?

No, I haven’t yet. But I really look forward to it and hope that it will be a big part of my business once they get it together in Albany and legalize same-sex marriage in New York State. It’s coming.

It sure is!! Be sure to follow @clairebuff on Twitter and don’t forget to watch her compete January 15th, 2011 LIVE on ABC from the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
